Defining Amherst is a student initiative about exploring the purpose of an Amherst College education, and improving our community to further that purpose.
It is a space to share our college experiences with each other and to examine what Amherst is (or should be) about. This site documents our thoughts about this inquiry.
To figure out how to implement this project, we decided to interview students, faculty, and staff about their experience at Amherst College. What issues do they care about? What do they value? Which meaningful experiences at Amherst kept them thinking or changed the way they viewed their lives? What does “awareness” mean to them? What is your purpose at Amherst (and beyond)? These are some of the questions that we seek to explore.
